PROBLEM STATEMENT

STEM students need ways to have non-academic achievements celebrated because I think it would improve school culture.

I know that this is a problem because I have had conversations with multiple students at STEM that believe the recognition of overall student-athlete accomplishments and accomplishments of other students' non-academic achievements is not fair. Several students that I interviewed believed that some student-athletes get recognized for their achievements while the majority believe they don’t get any recognition for being on another team. This is where the “unfairness” aspect comes in from students' point of view. When I asked 19 students from various grades, 12 students said that they believe that student-athletes don't get treated fairly at STEM at the moment.

This is important to me because although STEM does have "school spirit," it only goes to a certain extent. I think this is because we don't have any of our own sports teams. If we represent our student-athletes better, and the non-academic achievements of other students, I believe the student body at STEM will be more connected and therefore improving our culture in the school.
